It is great and joyous to mark this year’s United Nations Day With joy.

The United Nations Day is marking it’s 73rd anniversary on 24 October 2021 with the theme of “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”. It aims to make a better place for everyone around world.

As we strive to heal from the COVID-19 pandemic and reimagine a better future for people and planet, this year’s theme is “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world.”

Peace is the foundation of that recovery. The global vaccination effort cannot advance amidst armed conflict.

Nor can we build a sustainable, resilient, peaceful world while we are at war with nature. Recovery efforts offer an opportunity to transform our relationship with our planet and our environment.

The world cannot go back to what it was. As we count down to the International Day of Peace, I call on people everywhere to be part of a transformation for peace, by standing up against hatred and discrimination, by caring for the planet, and by showing the global solidarity that is so vital at this time.

The future of the global ocean economy is currently envisioned as advancing towards a ‘blue economy’ socially equitable, environmentally sustainable and economically viable ocean industries. However, tensions exist within sustainable development approaches, arising from differing perspectives framed around natural capital or social equity. Here we show that there are stark differences in outlook on the capacity for establishing a blue economy, and on its potential outcomes, when social conditions and governance capacity not just resource availability are considered, and we highlight limits to establishing multiple overlapping industries.

“Peace is not passive, arising from a simple lack of conflict. Peace is active, transformative. It calls us to action on the host of fronts to be discussed today, on climate change, gender violence, and inequality and economic justice.”

HAPPY CELEBRATIONS.
